Cycling Australia’s decision to impose a two-year sanction on cyclist John Cornish for the presence and use of nandrolone was today acknowledged by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA).

ASADA collected an in-competition sample from Mr Cornish on 12 September 2010 in Camden, NSW, during the Goulburn to Sydney Classic. The sample tested positive for nandrolone, which is an anabolic agent and is prohibited both in- and out-of-competition.

Mr Cornish’s two-year ban, which was backdated to the date of his provisional suspension, means he will be ineligible to participate as an athlete or support person in sport until 19 October 2012.

Mr Cornish’s competition results obtained on 12 September 2010 in the Goulburn to Sydney Classic are disqualified, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any medals, points, and prizes.

Anabolic agents pose many threats to an athlete’s health and some side effects may include an increase in blood pressure and cholesterol levels which can lead to heart disease. Liver disease and infertility can also result from the use of these agents.

Any athletes unaware of their responsibilities are encouraged to seek additional information online at ASADA’s website www.asada.gov.au
