Australian Michelle Mitchell wins Challenge Barcelona

After finishing second at Challenge Cairns in June this year Michelle Mitchell has gone one better and won Challenge Barcelona in 9:15. The race could have been anybody’s in the swim and bike but it was Mitchell who proved the strongest runner on the day. Erika Csomor couldn’t respond to Mitchell’s attack in the last 10km that saw Mitchell cross the line in 9:15:00, 3:37 minutes ahead of Csomor.

Aaron Farlow Third at Challenge Henley-on-Thames

Aaron Farlow has continued his UK adventure, which saw him take out Ironman UK in August with a third place at the tough Challenge Henley course. Petr Vabrousek (CZE) and Yvette Grice (GBR) took out the inaugural titles at the weekend. The men’s race started off looking like the battle was going to be between Aaron Farlow (AUS) and Stephen Bayliss (GBR), who was first out of the water, with Lothar Leder (GER) retiring early on the bike leg. But with only 20k to go there were just two minutes separating the top six men.

The inaugural Challenge Henley-on-Thames is shaping up to be an epic battle between Britain and Germany in the iron distance triathlon arena with Australian Aaron Farlow hoping to upset both. Farlow finished second at Ironman Wales last weekend so will have his work cut out but he is hoping for a podium.

The final 8 kilometres on the run was shoulder to shoulder as defending champion Tim Berkel from Australia and home town favorite Jimmy Johnsen of Denmark battled it out for a close and very exciting finish. The women’s race was a dominant performance as last year’s winner Rebekah Keat from Australia hammered the course like it was 2010 and finished off with a 3:05:02 marathon to reclaim her title with a blistering 8:52:42 finish.
