It’s really starting to get down to the business end of the 2011 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series and what better way to kick that off than one of the biggest events of the entire year, London. Not only is this weekend’s round crucial in determining who will be the 2011 ITU World Champions, it’s the first and last time athletes will be able to race the exact London 2012 course before next year’s Olympic Games.

It was an Emma of a day in Hamburg today as Australia’s triathlon trio Emma Moffatt, Emma Jackson and Emma Snowsill celebrated a triumphant and history-making ITU Dextro Energy Triathlon World Championship round in Hamburg. In what was arguably the first time in triathlon and maybe even world sporting history that three girls with the same christian name and from the same country shared the podium in a major World Championship round in any sport.

In the lead up to this weekend’s ITU Dextro Energy Triathlon World Championship round in Hamburg, Australia’s National Head Coach Shaun Stephens, runs the microscope over the Australian team’s preparations as they continue their march towards the all-important London round on August 6 and 7. The majority of the Australian athletes are in Aix Le Bain in France while the VIS group is in northern Spain under coach Jonno Hall, and Olympic champion Emma Snowsill continues her preparations in Germany.

The squeeze for Olympic berths in Australia’s star-studded triathlon team ensures a number of sub-plots during the opening race of the 2011 Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Sydney. And it seems Brendan Sexton and Emma Jackson are best placed to push the established stars in the April 10 event, which marks the start of a long campaign that will determine Olympic selection for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Reigning world champion Emma Moffatt will be joined by Olympic champion Emma Snowsill and last year’s rapidly emerging Under 23 world champion Emma Jackson in what will be an absorbing home soil battle. Rounding out a full strength Australian women’s team is the well-credentialed Annabel Luxford, Felicity Abram and Felicity Sheedy-Ryan. The Australian men’s team will again be headed by the ever-consistent Olympic duo of Brad Kahlefeldt and Courtney Atkinson. James Seear and Brendan Sexton.
