Ironman European Champion Camilla Pedersen in criticial condition following bike crash

Ironman European champion Camilla Pedersen has suffered what sounds to have been a serious bike crash whilst training in Esbjerg, Denmark on Tuesday. Ironman European champion Camilla Pedersen has suffered what sounds to have been a serious bike crash whilst training in Esbjerg, Denmark on Tuesday. According to the Danish Triathlon Federation the 30-year-old Ironman Champion sustained critical injuries, and has been admitted to the Odense University Hospital in Southern Denmark. Pedersen is being held in a coma, and is reported to be in a critical, but stable, condition.

According to reports Camilla has suffered skull fractures and bleeding around her brain as a result of the accident, and will be kept in an induced coma throughout the weekend to maximise possibility of recovery. Reports state Camilla was on a training ride with a group of cyclists, of whom suddenly became involved in a situation where a group of children attempted to cross the road in front of them. Camilla has crashed as a result of the situation.

Camilla won the Ironman European Championship back in July, in a time of 8:56:01. This qualified her for the Ironman World Championship in Kona this October, having ranked 17th on the professional women’s Kona points ranking system. We caught up with Camilla following her win, an interview that revealed her passion and excitement for the sport and her upcoming World Championship appearance.
