More than 2,000 athletes will descend on St Kilda for the inaugural GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne, taking on a 1.9km swim, 90km ride and 21.1km run.

The event will see athletes hit the water of Port Phillip Bay for the swim, with the ride taking in two laps of Melbourne’s famous Beach Road, before running a half-marathon along the St Kilda and Elwood waterfront, with the event culminating at the famous IRONMAN 70.3 finish line in Catani Gardens.

Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of The IRONMAN Group Oceania, said that the organisation was looking forward to bringing IRONMAN 70.3 racing to Melbourne.

“GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne is city racing at its finest,” said Meyer. “The course is centrally located, it’s spectator friendly and with a super quick scenic course it’s the ideal venue for newcomers and seasoned athletes keen to record a fast time.

“The challenges of the last two years have meant that our GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne athletes have had to wait longer than they expected to hit the start line in St Kilda but we promise the wait has been worth it and can’t wait to have them race with us this weekend,” he said. “A large number of our more than 2,000 athletes will be taking on their first IRONMAN 70.3 and we’re looking forward to seeing them achieve their goals on the finish line in Catani Gardens on Sunday.”

Racing at GWM IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne begins at 7.20am on Sunday morning, with the swim start on St Kilda Beach.
