Josh Amberger and Rebecca Clarke were the first to exit the water in their respective fields after the 3.8km swim, with athletes now on the 180km bike course at Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie.

Amberger pushed ahead early in the swim, breaking away from the chasing pack to come out of the water in 48:56, more than four minutes clear of Tim van Berkel.

Van Berkel exited the water two seconds clear of New Zealand’s Ben Phillips, with 2016 IRONMAN Australia champion Tim Reed fourth and Joel Wooldridge fifth.

New Zealand’s Rebecca Clarke showed once again why she is one of the strongest swimmers in the sport, finishing the swim in 53:00, over two minutes clear of Sarah Crowley, with Courtney Gilfillan just behind in third.

Moya Johansson was the fourth female to finish the swim, with Shannon Sutton fifth.

Athletes racing at the 35th anniversary IRONMAN Australia are now taking on the 180km bike leg, followed by the 42.2km run.
