Canberra 2011 70.3 Sold Out

General entries for the 2011 Ironman 70.3 Canberra triathlon have today sold-out with over three months remaining to race date. 1,360 age group and professional athletes will contest the December 11 event, which requires competitors to complete a 1.9km swim, 90.1km bike leg and a 21.1km run. The registration of 1,360 athletes makes it the largest field ever to compete at the event. The sold-out status of Ironman 70.3 Canberra sets another milestone for Australian Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events with Ironman 70.3 Shepparton, Ironman Western Australia, Ironman Australia and the Ironman Asia Pacific Championship all selling out almost immediately upon the opening of registrations.

New Pro Triathlete Matilda Raynolds on her First Major Podium in a Half Ironman

Matilda Raynolds is in her first year as a pro and whilst she has had a few podiums at Olympic and sprint distance this is her first podium at a major long distance race. I asked her today about whether it had sunk in. The race for Matilda came off well and she was happy to be able to back herself and negative split most of her times.

Michelle Wu and Ollie Whistler win the Crowne Plaza Canberra City Half Ironman Triathlon

Ollie Whistler won the Crowne Plaza Canberra City Half Ironman with a dominating bike leg and maintained his momentum throughout the half marathon. Michelle Wu went head to head with Lisa Marangon, a swim specialist, on the first 4km run and the bike and then put the accelerator down as she exited T2 and that was where she won the race. Luke Whitmore was second almost 6 minutes behind Ollie with Richard Munroe a further 12 seconds back. New to pro racing, Matilda Raynolds placed 3rd with the bike being the difference between her and Marangon.

Swim leg cancelled at Canberra Half Ironman

X-Tri Australia, after full consultation with all local ACT authorities and following a physical inspection of the swim course by our own swim safety team late Thursday and at first light today (Friday) has taken the decision to cancel the swim leg of the 10th Anniversary Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman.
