Australian Triathlete Joe Gambles wins Rohto Ironman 70.3 Boulder Triathlon

Australian Joe Gambles has won the Boulder 70.3 with a new course record. Gambles came out of the water with five other guys, well over a minute down on Andy Potts. He eventually rode himself in to a lead and hit the run with Fraser Cartmell and a handy 2:30 lead. With a 1:15:50 run about to unfold no one was going to beat Gambles today as he raced away to a finish time of 3:45:35.
Joe has had some great results so far in 2011 with a very good win at the Port Maquarie 70.3 in Australia this May and a third at Vineman 70.3 in July this year which included a 1:13:09 run.
South Africa’s Raynard Tissink was second.
Another Australian triathlete, Paul Ambrose, finished third today. Kiwi’s Bryan Rhodes and Callum Millward were also racing. Rhodes finished 8th overall with a good swim/bike but was just a little off the pace in the run. Millward was right up there when the run started but has been recorded as a DNF in the results along with early leader Andy Potts.
The women’s race was won by Angela Naeth with Kelly Williamson in second. Naeth and Williamson had a very close race finishing just over two minutes apart. Naeth’s bike time of 2:14 was around nine minutes faster than the next woman’s and was enough to keep her ahead of a fast finishing Williamson who ran four minutes faster. Amanda Lovato was third over eleven minutes behind Williamson.
Australian Christie Sym didn’t start the run after passing out. “I never left T2. I felt terrible from the moment I woke up and after
racking my bike in T2 passed out. I don’t remember anything until I woke up in
the med tent. “I passed a few checks & was released with a full bill of health.” Christie recently won Ironman Racine 70.3.
