New York’s David Kahn was the first professional male to complete the swim (24:26), with a steady stream of men right on his tail, including defending champion, Dirk Bockel, who was just three seconds behind.
American TJ Tollakson then took over the bike leg with a performance no one else would come close to. His stunning 1:59:57 ride for the 56 miles, gave him an monstrous lead of seven minutes and 27 seconds over Bockel, along with Richie Cunningham (AUS) and Timothy O’Donnell (USA) who were less than 20 seconds behind him.
Unfortunately for Tollakson his lead was not large enough. O’Donnell took over control of the race at mile 8, and ran a 1:15:18 half marathon to become the men’s champion at Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida, halting the clock at 3:51:18. Viktor Zyemtsev of the Ukraine ran himself into second place with the top run of 1:13:53, while the Luxembourg’s Bockel finished in third. Likely feeling the effects of the incredible bike ride, Tollakson finished in seventh after a 1:30:26 run.
