The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will be held on Sunday 5 February 2023, with the Hobart born and raised athlete excited by the recent event launch.

“I was excited to hear IRONMAN were finally coming to my hometown, when I found out the finish line will be 100m from where I lived in Salamanca during my school years it obviously takes the whole home race aspect to a new level,” said Wurf. “As a little kid I grew up skateboarding in the shed where transition will be located on the wharf. My father was an abalone fisherman so I spent my holidays terrorising those wharfs on my bike and board while dad was working on the boat while it was docked.

“Obviously over the past 30 years the area has been developed to a fantastic mix of attractions, museums, restaurants and nightlife, but knowing how it all used to be will be really special when I walk into that shed to rack my bike,” he said. “It was a blue Apollo back in those days, I’ll be using a little more sophisticated piece of machinery on race day obviously.”

Wurf knows what it takes to stand on the top step of the podium, with his recent successes including victory at IRONMAN Copenhagen last year, and wins at IRONMAN Italy and IRONMAN Australia in 2019.

IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will offer a 1.9km swim course in the Derwent River that hugs the historic Battery Point before embarking on a 90km ride with the most vertical gain of any IRONAMN 70.3 bike course in Oceania. The 21.1km run will allow athletes to enjoy some of the best scenery in and around Hobart, with the world-famous IRONMAN 70.3 finish line to be alongside Princes Wharf.

“It quite possibly will be the most spectacular course and atmosphere on the IRONMAN circuit,” said Wurf. “The wharf area is absolutely buzzing during the summer, every man, women, kid and their dog is down having a great time, it’s the time of the year the city really comes alive and the Expo and finish line area will be right in the heart of it all.”

“The course will be as you expect, tough but fair, mind-blowing views, very very Tasmanian,” he said.

While the 38-year-old currently spends the majority of his time overseas, either racing as a professional triathlete or cyclist, Wurf remains a Tasmanian to the core.

“As a proud Tasmanian we are always singing the island’s praises,” said Wurf. “The truth is words cannot express how unique the place is, I travel the world and there’s obviously nowhere on the planet that resembles Tasmania.

“It’ll be fantastic to give the triathlon world an opportunity to see it for them themselves,” he said. “I certainly encourage everyone to bring family and friends, this is a trip that everyone can enjoy, not just the athletes.”

IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania.

Entries for IRONMAN 70.3 Tasmania will open on 31 March 2022.
