Australian long course triathlon racing was back in Forster this weekend and there was a solid field of pro males racing. Headlining the race was Clayton Fettell, Tim Berkel along with a a host of guys wanting to perform well against these two proven big names.
As expected Fettell got the jump on the field but close on his heels was Michael Fox out of the water. Between Fettell and Fox though was a team swimmer, Forster local Warren Keegan. He was 30 seconds down on Fettell. 3 minutes further back was a group including Tim Berkel, Chris Dmitrieff, Bradley Clark and Alex Rigby. Berkel wasted no time and set about to reel Fox in. By the half way mark on the bike Berkel was seconds in front of Fox and around 7-8 minutes down on Fettell. A further minute and a half back was a group of five riders.
This chase pack of five eventually caught Berkel and Fox. Once together Adam Gordon had a crack on a hill and both he and Berkel eventually came in to T2 close togther and 11:30 down on Fettell. Next in was Fox who was going to leave nothing out there in an attempt to chase these two guys ahead of him down.
All things going well, Fettell was just too far ahead at the start of the run for Berkel to bridge the gap. Fox though was after a podium. After his season in the US training full time he wanted to show that he could race these lead guys.
In the end Tim Berkel did enough to cover Fox and in turn Fox put in a solid run of 1:16 to claim a podium against a quality field.
Berkel through one of his Di2 aero bar shifters to someone as he exited T2. This was a left over from his bike mishap on the way to the race.
Melbourne’s Luke Whitmore had a good day but a 5 minute penalty for drafting (downhill) put paid to a chance of getting on the podium.
