Current World Ironman Champion Craig Alexander has announced that he will be racing at Ironman Melbourne in March this year.
Racing in the inaugural Melbourne Ironman seems to have a lot of pulling power with many of Australia’s leading iron men and women signing up to take take part. In addition many of the top 70.3 pro triathletes will also be racing in Melbourne.
Alexander is still unsure about racing at Abu Dhabi due to a start/stop training regime in 2012 and needs to be fit and healthy for Melbourne.
Since winning the 2011 Ironman World Championship Alexander has spent most of his time back home with his family and also supporting the charities that are close to his heart. Late last year he spent the day with children from the K.I.D.S Foundation in Sydney and has spent this morning taking part in a charity world record challenge with the K.I.D.S Foundation in an attempt to break the world 100km treadmill time trial record.
For the record the team of athletes smashed the world record and posted a time of 5:24:10 for the 100kms.
The Guinness World Record of the “Treadmill, Fastest Time to Run 100 km (TEAM), is about to be challenged by a strong Australian team of 12, led by current and three time World Ironman Triathlon Champion Craig Alexander. The record is currently held by a 12 man team from the Twin City Track Club in North Carolina USA with a time of 5 hrs, 42 mins and 32 secs. Some of Australia’s most talented athletes which includes Craig along with Australian marathon legend Steve Moneghetti, 2011 50-55 age group Triathlon World Champion John Mergler, current Australian record holder over a mile Lisa Corrigan, elite lifeguards Stephen Madden and Clint Kimmins with Bondi Rescue’s Andrew ‘Reidy’ Reid and Adriel ‘Bacon’ Young.
The team will be doing it for an extra special reason, to also raise awareness and funds for the KIDS Foundation, who support inspirational young Australian’s with a with challenges of their own. The foundation works to both educate about injury prevention as well as to support seriously injured children who have endured trauma, horrific burns and other life changing injuries.
