In 2016, Plat won a bronze medal in handcycling and a gold medal in triathlon at the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio. After the big wins, he decided to take a year off. Events didn’t quite follow that plan, however. In 2017, Plat competed in more than 20 races and became an unstoppable force.
In September, 2017 alone, Plat won three world titles. He dominated Rotterdam and claimed two gold titles in the Para Cycling World Championships in South Africa. In the same month, he also won the handcycling competition in the Berlin Marathon.
The following month, Plat headed to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, where he set a new record time for paratriathletes. Out of all Kona competitors, he finished 26th in 08:41:47.
In April of the same year, Plat won the PTHC class in ITU’s Gold Coast World Para-Triathlon Series in Australia.
Plat currently has his heart set on another chance to represent the Netherlands in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
