Jimmy Johnsen has staged a remarkable turnaround by winning Ironman Western Australia today. Just two weeks ago Johnsen finished 5th at Ironman Cozumel. Speaking to Trizone during the week Johnsen was totally confident he had recovered well enough to be competitive at IMWA.
Johnsen, along with his coach Grant Giles of Aeromax Team planned the recovery from the minute he finished Cozumel. Choosing to not go to the finishline late and miss the after party, Johnsen was 100% focused on winning Ironman Western Australia and he did just that.
The key to today’s win was coming out of the swim with a strong pack of quality pros and not loosing to much time.
Defending champion and also the race favourite Timo Bracht suffered mechanical issues on the bike which put him completely out of the running today.
Third placed Matty White looked like this might be his race at the 28km mark in the run. White felt he had everything lined up for this race and was confident that this could be his day. Second placed Horst Reichel fell off the pace for awhile midway through the run but staged a comeback to get back in to the race and eventually take second place.
Veteran Jason Shortis got within 25 seconds of the podium but White managed to hang on.
