In a race marred by controversy Leon Griffin and Sam Warriner have shown their class to take the 2011 Campbell’s Shepparton Ironman 70.3. Whilst three of the lead guys were disqualified due to an ‘early’ turnaround Griffin was never in doubt with a 2:09 on the bike followed by the race’s quickest run of 1:15.

In the women’s race Samantha Warriner feels ‘re-inspired’ after her win today. With a weeks training under her belt Warriner raced to a solid second at Port Macquarie last weekend and went one better today. It was a quick ‘in and out’ visit for Warriner after she only arrived in Australia yesterday and has already flown back to New Zealand.

Sam Warriner didn’t have it all her own way after heading out on to the run behind Elly Franks and Lisa Marangon. Franks rode an incredibly quick 2:23 and Marangon came in to T2 with a 2:27 bike. Warriner’s run was just too fast on the day for the other two.

Lisa Marangon made up for last weekend at Port Macquarie where whe pulled out at 4kms in to the run with a solid second today. Another pro who struggled last weekend at Port was Nicole Ward who proved that a week off work resting and preparing for Shepparton was just what the Doctor ordered.

Elly Franks was the pacesetter early on in the race but maybe left her run legs on the bike course after a race quick 2:23. Madeleine Oldfield also struggled today. Oldfield is looking for her ‘mojo’ after a great start to the season and some solid racing gaining experience in the USA. Oldfield, like many of our other long distance pros, is getting tired after a long season. With Xmas coming up all will be looking forward to a well earned break.

In yet another shot in the arm for the ‘old blokes’ David Meade was the first age grouper home in 4:07:39. Meade, racing in the 40-44 category was not far off pace. Last weekend in Port Macquarie Finnbar Crennan (40-44) was the first age grouper home and at two weeks prior Crennan snuck in under the radar at the new Forster Ultimate triathlon to win overall. The open category at Forster was won by Nathan ‘Struggla’ Stewart but what no one realised at the time was that Crennan, starting a few waves back, had actually posted the fastest time of the day.
