Lisa Marangon, Rina Hill and Rachael Paxton to headline Hervey Bay Olympic Distance Triathlon

Lisa Marangon has confirmed that she will be racing in Hervey Bay where she will be going up against Rachael Paxton and Rina Hill in the relaunched 2XU Hervey Bay Olympic distance triathlon. With over $25,000 in cash and prizes on offer it is a wonder more of our top triathletes who are not racing at Port Macquarie on the same day are not racing up there.

41 year old Rina Hill is back to race where she won in 1993. Hill represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and is also a Commonwealth Games silver medalist. Just weeks after competing at Athens in 2004 Hill won the Sydney Marathon.

Lisa Marangon has left behind her long distance triathlon career in pursuit of an Olympic distance career with the goal of racing ITU. After placing 3rd at Ironman Lake Placid in the USA last year and winning Bussleton half ironman Lisa has now started winning Olympic distance races and has just won the NSW triseries. This series took place over 5 races.

With just over a week to go already over 300 individuals and 45 relay teams have entered the newest Olympic Distance triathlon in Queensland. On Sunday May 1st nearly 500 participants will take part in the 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run event being staged form Seafront Oval at Hervey Bay on Queensland’s Fraser Coast.

The race organisers are putting on a Multisports expo on the Saturday where competitors will be able to view some of the latest in sports offerings from sponsors such as Australia’s leading performance sportswear brand 2XU, SportsFirst and Le CycloSportif along with other sports focused exhibitors.

The pristine Bay waters will host the 1.5km swim and given the recent excellent conditions fast times are expected of the Pialba Beach.  In a first for Hervey Bay the 40km cycle course will feature two excitement filled loops from the pancake flat hot mix along Torquay Esplanade to the pinch of the Gatakers Bay hill at Point Vernon. All roads will be closed to traffic during the event and competitors are banking on recording personal best times over the distance. The 10km run will follow the scenic foreshore bike way down to Urangan and back with the shady trees expected to bring welcome relief from the sun.

Competitors will compete in 26 individual and 6 team categories as they vie for a prize pool of  $26,000 in cash and prizes including, first places of $3,000 (male & female) and  a lucky draw open to all starters of a ready to race $3,000 Azzurri bicycle!
