Mirinda Carfrae wins Subaru Ironman 70.3 EagleMan, Richie Cunningham second

Australia wrapped up a good weekend of long course racing with Mirinda Carfrae producing a commanding win at Eagleman Maryland, and Richie Cunningham a very impressive second behind American TJ Tollakson. Elly Franks placed 11th female overall and age grouper Pat Garrett from South Yarra placed 13th

Carfrae exited the water with defending champion Kiwi Sam Warriner 3 minutes down on Amanda Stevens and Tenille Hoogland. Hoogland extended the lead over carfrae on the bike entering T2 2:28 ahead of Warriner and 4.15 up on Carfrae.

Carfrae is however in a diffenent class on the run, and this lead was never going to be enough. Carfrae recorded a 1:21:39 run (4:33 faster than any other woman) to finish in 4:15:31 and re-claim the EagleMan title she won in 2009.

Warriner overtook Hoogland for third (4:23:02).

In the mens race Richie Cunningham showed that Carfrae is not the only Australian with a killer run split, running 1.16.56, the fastest split of the day, he exited T2 in 7th, but was able to pass 5 pro competitors to take second place in 3:57:43.

Defending champion kiwi Terenzo Bozzone was in contention in the swim and on the bike, being just 4mins off the lead in 3rd place going into T2, but he slipped to 9th on the run finishing in 4:07:32. The race was won by American TJ Tollakson who set up the win on the bike leg with the fastest split of the day at 2:03:41.

Also Elly Franks finished 11th female overall. She had a solid swim/bike but something obviously went wrong on the run with a 1:43 posted.

Pat Garrett from South Yarra was also racing with a handy 13th in his age group (45-49) and top 100 overall.
