Rebekah Keat wins Challenge Cairns 2011

Rebekah Keat finished 12th overall and won the women’s Cairns Airport Challenge Cairns triathlon today ahead of a determined Michelle Mitchell. Mitchell came from behind to slowly pick off the girls in front of her. She looked fresh for the whole run. At one stage casually asking as she ran by ‘how far is the next woman in front of me?’. Next lap Michelle was in front of her.

Carrie Lester was 3rd and Candice Hammond was 4th. Both Candice Hammond and Carrie Lester rode 5:11 with Belinda Granger having the next fastest bike split at 5:13.

Belinda Granger and Michelle Mitchell both had terrible T1s with both taking 2 1/2 minutes to get out on to the bike.

A pack of five formed early on the bike. Eventually Granger and Carrie Lester were able to establish a break of about 1 1/2 minutes over Rebekah Keat with Mitchell and Christie Sym further back.

Within the first 10kms of the run Keat had over taken Granger and Lester. Keat looked strong and determined for the entire race. After the race Keat commented that she never felt better in the final half of the marathon and this gives her some great confidence going in to her next few races.

Speaking to Ali Fitch on the sidelines during the race she said Michelle Mitchell is the one to watch. Fitch raced her comeback race today in the Cairns Half after four years out due to numerous injuries. She will be racing Ironman the USA next month.

First age grouper home was Kym Jaenke with the fastest swim of the day.
