Sam Long and Angela Naeth Claim Victories At 2019 Ironman Chattanooga

On a hot day in the heart of southeastern Tennessee, Chattanooga played host to athletes from around the world on Sunday at the 2019 Little Debbie IRONMAN® Chattanooga triathlon presented by McKee, A Family Bakery. Sam Long from Boulder, Colo. took the top honors with a finishing time of 08:22:21. Long’s victory in Sunday’s event gave him wins at both the 2019 Little Debbie IRONMAN Chattanooga triathlon presented by McKee, A Family Bakery as well as the 2019 Little Debbie IRONMAN Chattanooga 70.3 triathlon presented by McKee, A Family Bakery. Matt Russell (Lisbon, N.Y.) finished in second place in the men’s professional race with a time 08:31:49 while Nicholas Chase (St. Petersburg, Fla.) rounded out the podium in third with a time of 08:49:30.

Angela Naeth of British Columbia, Canada earned the top spot on the women’s podium after pacing the field with a finishing time of 09:18:45. Naeth put an exclamation point on her victory by posting the third-fastest run time of any competitor in the field on Sunday, trailing only Matt Russell and Sam Long. Lisa Roberts (Tucson, Ariz.) finished in second place in the women’s professional race with a time 09:22:31 while the Netherlands’ Lenny Ramsey took third with a time of 09:27:16.

The 2019 Little Debbie IRONMAN Chattanooga triathlon presented by McKee, A Family Bakery saw nearly 1,800 athletes representing 35 countries, regions and territories and all 50 states start the race. Competitors ranged in age from 18-78 years old. One of more than 40 events in the global IRONMAN Series, the event led athletes along a 2.4-mile swim, 116-mile bike and 26.2-mile run throughout southeastern Tennessee and its surrounding areas for an extended-length course total of 144.6 miles. The competition started with a point-to-point swim in the Tennessee River before athletes embarked on the two-loop bike course that ventured through northern Georgia and historic Chickamauga. The two-loop run course took athletes through scenic downtown Chattanooga before finishing at Ross’s Landing along the Tennessee River. The event offered a professional prize purse of $40,000 and 40 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2020 IRONMAN World Championship.
