After full consultation with all local ACT authorities and following a physical inspection of the swim course by our own swim safety team late Thursday and at first light today (Friday) has taken the decision to cancel the swim leg of the 10th Anniversary Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman.
Lake Burley Griffin (as with ALL lakes and rivers in Canberra) currently remains closed to primary contact (IE: Swimming and boating of ALL types), and our swim team has further identified dangerous conditions in the swim course, with floating debris (including whole trees!) and strong currents.
Therefore we are making an early decision in order to aid competitors travelling to Canberra for the race, which will go ahead with a 4km run in place of the swim, making for a full time race available to all participants.
Further testing results due later today are NOT expected to clear the water, following major rainfalls 24 hours ago.
Please note that swim aside, local flooding to the south of Canberra is not expected to affect the course for the race and the Crowne Plaza Canberra Half Ironman is going ahead with the first wave starting at 6:30am Sunday.
Registration and the Compulsory briefing will remain as per the published schedule – the race is going ahead.
Weather for Saturday and Sunday is forcast as fine, sunny (a little overcast Sunday) and no more heavy rain is forecast in the region with all flood levels receding at this time.
A pre-race news letter will update all participants directly
