Australian triathlete Joe Gambles finished 4th overall at the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 in Clearwater, Florida, and recorded the fastest bike split of the day. Richie Cunningham was 5th and Chris Legh was 10th. Peter Schokman was 34th overall.

Other Australian pros did not fare so well. Pip Taylor had an uncharacteristic 2:01 half marathon and Tim Berkel withdrew after a flat tyre at 15km. Conditions were tougher than previous years with a choppy swim and strong winds on the bike leg.

Germany’s Michael Raelert took the men’s race from the Czech Republic’s two-time Olympian Filip Ospaly to become the first man to go back to back as the Ironman 70.3 World titlist.

Britain’s Jodie Swallow led the women’s race from the start and went on to claim victory by over 6 minutes from fellow Brit Leanda Cave, and in doing so added another long course world title to her 2009 ITU triumph.
