There will be a number of Australians looking to beat Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack to the punch and ensure they are not ‘Lanced’ at today’s (Sat US time) Ironman 70.3 Hawaii.
In a stacked field Australian Ollie Whistler will be looking to test himself against the great man, while fellow Australian Greg Bennett (yes we know he now races for the US, but he is Australian at heart!) continues his Ironman preparations with a crack at the course. As the winner in Hy-Vee last year, Bennett not only pocketed one of the largest prize purses in the sport, he earned himself an entry to the Ironman World Championship here on Kona in October.
Armstong is up against a quality field that includes last year’s runner-up here in Honu, and celebrated triathlon cyclist Chris Lieto (now that will be interesting!), and Germany’s super-cyclist Maik Twelsiek.
In the woman’s race Kate Bevilaqua will fly the flag for Australia against Melanie McQuaid, the three-time Xterra world champ and Ironman 70.3 California winner, Linsey Corbin, and Hilary Biscay, one of the best swimmers in the sport.
