On Saturday November 22, 2014 the iconic sands of Australia’s most famous beach will play host to the inaugural Bondi Splash n’ Dash to raise funds for Waverley Action for Youth Services (WAYS).
The brainchild of local boy and one of the stars of the hit TV show Bondi Lifeguards, Andrew “Reidy” Reid, the Bondi Splash n’ Dash is set to unite locals and elite athletes in a fresh and fun event celebrating community, health and the
good old Aussie outdoors.
“I wanted to create something that took the best parts of other beach sporting events and roll it into one big celebration,” said Reidy. “Ocean swims can be boring for spectators, but this combines a swim with a run down the beach, and a big party to wrap up. You don’t need any equipment, and we have structured it so that pretty much anyone aged over 14 can enter. We also have a longer course for elite athletes.”
The day kicks off with the novelty “Duck Dash” event, followed by age groups, teams, then elite sportspeople. Proceedings will be televised throughout the morning with live crosses to the Nine Network’s Today show, and Reidy has tapped some of his celebrity mates to take part in the fun.
A total prize purse of $4000 is up for grabs The festivities will kick on late into the afternoon with North Bondi RSL hosting
the post dash bash and presentation, along with a special three-set appearance by season-one star of The Voice Australia, Chris Sebastian.
Proceeds of the event will support WAYS, a local organisation close to Reidy’s heart. A self described “fat kid” who battled bullies and depression, WAYS provided Reidy and other kids with a safe place to get support, help, or just somewhere to hang out. Bondi Splash n’ Dash aims to raise $5000 for the crew at WAYS.
Built in 1992, the WAYS youth centre in Wairoa Ave has grown to now include a school with more than 24 students who have left the mainstream system, but has seen little investment or upkeep, says CEO and school principal Russell King. “$5000 will go a long way towards fixing up our kitchen and will keep our breakfast program going for at least a year,” says Mr King. “The Splash n’ Dash is a great initiative and we are just really pleased that it’s going to help keep our
programs running.”
