Crowie only announced that was racing Ironman Coeur D’Alene a couple of days before the race in a bid to earn the points he needs to guarantee his starting place at Kona this year. However the two time World Champion has shown what a class act he is by taking out the event and setting a new course record in the process.
Speaking from the medical tent (with a lei around his neck!) Crowie said that he was stoked and had “pulled a rabbit out of the hat today”. Alexander managed to pull together a good race – the swim was bracing at only about 13C, and he was about 3rd out of the water. He rode really well on the undulating course, losing just 8 mins on the bike to Twelseik of Germany, mainly in the last 40 miles or so of the very hilly bike course. Maiki took the bike course record by Nine minutes but Craig was under it as well.
Craig broke the run course record ( ran high 2:46) as well as the Race record, to finish in 8:19. Twelsik ( 11th in Kona last year) was second and Tom Evans of Canada and previous multiple CDA IM champ was 3rd.
Crowie reported that the crowds were massive and huge and very vocal, and that all in all he was very pleased.
