Oceania Cup triathletes in Wollongong for Sunday’s OTU Sprint Cup

Wollongong will host elite triathletes from 19 countries this weekend as they contest the OTU Sprint Triathlon Oceania Cup. Wollongong is used to having a big triathlon festival this time each year but we don’t normally see this caliber of athletes in these numbers racing.

The weekend will host a round of the Australia Age Group Standard distance Championship as well as sprint,

The current Oceania and Australian Elite Championship and world No.2 Junior ITU Triathlete Jacob Birtwhistle will also be racing.

Norway’s Jorgen Gundersen will be hard to beat out of the water. Chosen as a training partner by Javier Gomez for his swimming ability Gunderson bases himself in Spain. He knows Birtwhistle well as they both race for the same team in France.

Headlining the women’s race is Commonwealth Games athlete and Canadian Sarah-Anne Brault. Brault is a Wollongong local over summer where she trains with many of her Canadian ITU teammates. She will be hard to beat on Sunday.

Things to do in Wollongong

The Revolver Cafe is only 200m from transition at 22 Market Street. This is just on the other side of the park on Harbour Street. This is a cool espresso cafe where the owner Rick makes the coffee and is passionate about what her does. He is a real character as well.

The Throsby Winebar is the latest bar in Wollongong. It is on Kembla Street just near the Crown Street mall and only 100m from South Coast Runners. Eric and Maddie have a selection of outstanding wines and there is also some nice beers on tap.
