Three-time IRONMAN World Champion, and new mum of daughter Isabelle, Aussie Mirinda Carfrae has announced that IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship in Cairns (10 June 2018) will be her long-awaited return to IRONMAN racing.
The pint-sized Australian powerhouse has released her 2018 race schedule and the highlight for IRONMAN fans is her debut appearance on the stunning Cairns course, her only full distance race in preparation for her assault on the IRONMAN World Championships on 13 October 2018.
Following a year-long break from professional racing, Carfrae said she is fired up and cannot wait to get back to competition.
“I’m excited to get back to Australia in June to race the Asia Pacific Championships. Cairns is a beautiful and challenging course and the women’s field looks fierce. Although I’m from Brisbane, I don’t get to Australia often to race. I’ll also be racing along with my husband Timothy and my brother so being able to race with the support of my extended family will be a huge bonus.”
With her new perspective as a parent, and with her body and mind refreshed following time off, Carfrae is pumped for her racing comeback.
“Taking time off to start a family has been the most rewarding experience of my life. But I can’t deny my competitive fire, and my drive to push myself to new levels of performance. Now, as Izzy’s mum, I’m more motivated than ever to make every training session matter and to race to my best ability for my little family.”
“It feels really good to be back in good form. I’m in a new stage of my life and merging motherhood with training and other responsibilities is certainly a juggling act, but it’s one I’m embracing. I believe it is possible to do it all and do it all exceptionally well—and I hope I can help inspire other mums and dads to do the same.”
IRONMAN 70.3 Texas will kick off Carfrae’s schedule that includes monthly race appearances in the build to regaining her crown at the IRONMAN World Championship.
“I’m hungry for it. I haven’t been on that top step in Kona since 2014, and every year the women’s field gets stronger and faster. But that doesn’t scare me; instead, it inspires me to rise to the challenge. I’m not afraid to say that I want to be back on top, and I believe I have what it takes to make that happen,” she said.
