Race 3 of the Gatorade Triathlon Series 2011/12 held at Green Point in Brighton today played host to yet another amazing field of Elite, Age group and amateur triathletes. In what was a refreshing change, a fantastic day of stellar weather greeted triathletes from the word ‘go’.

Brighton was first established as a triathlon venue back in 1992 and since then has had some fantastic events play out at this location. AIS triathlete and winner of last year’s Series Brendan Sexton, was in red hot form as he went head to head against a strong Victorian contingent, including Race 1 and 2 champion Peter Kerr, and VIS talent Jamie Huggett. Peter Kerr led the pack right out of the swim with Jamie Huggett dominating the bike leg, but it was Brendan ‘Kung-Fu’ Sexton’s time to shine with a powerhouse run finish in 52:33. Commentator for the event, V8 racing personality Cameron Van den Dungen interviewed Brendan Sexton about his plans for the upcoming season.

Once again, Race 3 undoubtedly witnessed an epic battle in the Female Elite field with the Beijing Olympian and Race 1/ 2 winner Erin Densham taking on last year’s Series champion Madeleine Oldfield. In a thrilling finish Madeleine Oldfield wrenched the female elite crown from Erin by pipping her at the finish line in 59:25.

A field of over 1500 participants took part in today’s event, with the course covering a 500m swim, 20km ride and 5km run course.
In the 25 years since SuperSprint put on the company’s first triathlon in Portarlington, the series has grown phenomenally and has certainly stamped its’ mark as Victoria’s Premier Triathlon Series.

David Hansen, Director and founder of SuperSprint, was elated at the fantastic weather conditions and idyllic setting for Race 3. “Coming back to Brighton is such a feeling of nostalgia and to see so many people enjoying a day out with friends and family is a special feeling being an organizer.” Mr Hansen said.

“The atmosphere at the event was electric and triathlon is such an exciting sport to watch in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics” added Mr Hansen.

The Active Feet Fun Tri, held in conjunction with the Gatorade Triathlon Series, is proving just as popular as beginner triathletes and social competitors make their start in triathlons with the mini race format.
