K-Swiss Running – A shoe for each run of the week – review by Johan Borg

You will notice that many shoe company’s offer a variety of styles in its catalogue, a high mileage trainer, a lightweight trainer and a racing flat.

Each shoe is designed with different features in mind and I have found that using these three styles of shoes can help your consistently in training and racing.

I believe splitting the weekly run volume over different styles of shoes is better for you, being that different shoes causes small changes in running form and hence spreads the load on the different muscles in the body and reduces the chance of repetitive injury.

I have been lucky enough to be involved with K-Swiss over the last couple of years and their shoe range is some of the best I have run in with an excellent variety in the three styles of shoe. They offer a high mileage trainer called a Blade Max, a light weight trainer called a Kwicky and a race flat known as the K-Ruuz.

This a stability trainer with lots of cushioning that weighs just under 300g.

This shoe I use for long runs on the road as well as for recovery runs at easy or steady pace. As I over pronate I use a more supportive shoe for my longer and easier runs. K-Swiss have built the Blade Max with seam free technology which means blisters and chafing is less likely even when used without socks. It’s a great training shoe for pounding the pavement on those long 30km training runs when your body and running form get tired.

Kwicky Blade

This is a lightweight trainer so something between a normal trainer shoe and a racing flat, so it weighs just over 250g. They fit nicely and feature a 10mm heal to toe drop, they also seems quite roomie in the toe box. The Kwicky also offer some slight medial support.

The forefoot is quite flexible so you engage your whole foot when running, this gives the Kwicky a really good feel for the pavement and a good push off which makes them feel fast. The cushioning feels very different from what other brands I’ve run in before. The Kwicky cushioning feels progressive so that initially on impact they feel really soft and then as more weight is going through the sole the harder it gets. This gives the shoes a springy but firm feel at the same time.

Because the shoes have some medial stability and cushioning technology they can be used as both a trainer for people that just need a little support or as a racing flat for longer races for people that over pronate and want some support in a race shoe.

I use these shoes for fast tempo runs and bricks. These are also the shoes I use when running on trails as they provide a good feel for the ground.

This shoe also got some neat features such as drainage holes for water and sweat. It also features seam free technology minimizing the chance of blisters and chafing.


This is a true racing flat that weighs just over 150 grams, so half the Blade Max. I have been using these shoes for racing and my weekly interval sets. The K-Ruuz have served me from running 5km to the marathon run leg at Ironman WA and they are by far are the best racing flats I have run in.



The K-Ruuz is built with limited cushioning with just a hint of support. You find they feel light, flexible and fast. The shoes upper is soft, breathable and without seams which makes them suitable for barefoot running. Like the Kwicky they are also built with drainage holes in the sole to stop the squelching in racing.

Johan Borg is a 23 year old physiotherapy major from Fremantle WA who caught the attention of a few with his 6th placed finish at Ironman Western Australia in 2012. At 23 Johan is eleven years younger than the winner Jimmy Johnsen and five years younger than any other professional male on race day. He completed the Ironman in 8:43 and also has a 70.3 PB of 3:57 from Mandurah 2012.
