The Gatorade Queensland Triathlon Series presented by Scody (Gatorade QTS), kicks off the 2015-2016 season this weekend on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, 2015 with Round 1 at Robina.

The event marks 22 years since Angus Charlton, one of the pioneers of triathlon in Queensland, offered individual short course, teams and kids triathlons in a safe supervised environment at Robina in December 1993.

From those who keep coming back after year after year, like professional athletes Sam Betten, Drew Box and Adam Gordon, who will be battling it out for a win in the elites, or those who are trying a tri for the first time, like Alf Lakin (75). The spirit of triathlon will be alive and well at the Gatorade QTS this season.

“Gatorade QTS is a nostalgic event for me and I love coming back to compete at a grass roots level. I remember coming to Robina as a 13 year old and after the bike leg I couldn’t find where I had left my shoes in transition. It took a good 3 minutes to find them and start the run leg!” Betten said.

Rest assured, he has come a long way since then, cementing his place among  Australia’s elite  triathletes and will be going into Sunday’s race as favourite along with the likes of Ben Shaw, Drew Box, Charlie Quin, Kane Richards and Adam Gordon.

In the elite women’s field, up and comer Danielle De Francesco has made a smooth transition into the sport from Surf & Open Water Swimming. She’ll no doubt be the one to chase down for young guns Joanne Miller and Katinka von Elsner-Wellsteed.

The Gatorade QTS Round 1 event will also encompass open water swims on Saturday 26th September at 12pm. On Sunday 27th September, Robina will come alive with the Kool Kids (100/2/400), Enticer (200/8/2) and Super Sprint (400/16/4) and the new distance of QTS Long (800/32/6) (Swim “metres /Bike “kilometres / Run – kilometres).

The Round 1 event will be used by many as a ‘warm up’ for the Round 5 event in January 2016 that will play host to the National Age Group Sprint Distance Championships and National Paratriathlon Championships as well as Race 2 of the Australian Junior Tri Series.
