St Kilda’s Catani Garden’s came alive today, Sunday 20 March, as it hosted the 21st anniversary of the Gatorade St Kilda triathlon.
Beijing Olympian Erin Densham, and 2012 London Olympic hopeful Brenden Sexton took the line honours against the Series’ strongest fields this season, with a prize pool of $5,000 awarded.
Sexton, an AIS scholarship holder, had his work cut out from the starter’s gun as he took on both National and International talent over the sprint course of a 750m swim, 20km cycle, and 5km run. However Sexton managed to keep his competitors at bay, storming home to take his fourth win of the Series, ahead of the Victorian Institute of Sport’s Peter Kerr, and the Gatorade Portarlington winner Craig McKenzie.
Jimmy Johnsen of Denmark, proved himself in his first Australian race with a blistering cycle time of 28:15 “the fastest of the day.
In the female elite division, the top quality field was lead out by the undefeated Madeleine Oldfield. Oldfield was backing up from her third placing in the Australian long course triathlon the weekend before in Huskisson, NSW.
Oldfield, being tested for the first time this Series, was outrun by Densham who finished just over one minute ahead of the field. ITU Junior talent, Anna Coldham, was third across the line.
Celebrations continued throughout the morning as the 2,400 triathletes celebrated the 21st anniversary event, and the Series finale with perfect racing weather.
With Series titles up for grabs, the Age Group Championship wave was full of talented triathletes as they mixed it with the best. The top 3 age groupers across the line were Troy Drinan in 59min 10sec (30-34) Chris Bradford in 59min 57sec (35-39) and Simon Bevege in third, 1hr 7min (25-29).
SuperSprint Director David Hansen was thrilled with the event today, proving once again that the popularity of triathlon is increasing dramatically in recent years.
“There were so many new people who were doing their first triathlon today “a big congratulations to all those participants”. Mr Hansen said.
Congratulations to all participants in the 2011/12 Gatorade Triathlon Series “Victoria’s premier triathlon series!
