Deca Triathlon Champion Robert Kara Triumph Overshadowed by Doping Allegations

The ultra-endurance sports world was captivated in May 2023 when Robert Karaś, a Polish athlete celebrated for his incredible feat, shattering the world record at the Deca Triathlon in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Completing a staggering 38 km swim, 1,800 km bike ride and a 422 km run in an extraordinary 164 hours, 14 minutes, and 2 seconds, Karaś’s performance was hailed as one of the greatest feats in the history of the sport.

However, Karaś’s celebration was short-lived. Shortly after his record-breaking finish, news broke that he had tested positive for prohibited substances during the event. The revelation sent shockwaves through the ultra-endurance community, tarnishing what many believed was an unassailable achievement.

An Unparalleled Achievement

The Deca Triathlon is an extreme test of human endurance, pushing athletes to the brink as they complete a course 10 times the length of a standard Ironman. Karaś didn’t just finish; he dominated. His record-breaking time surpassed the previous mark by over 18 hours, with splits that reflected his dominance across all three disciplines.

  • Swim: 9 hours, 34 minutes
  • Bike: 69 hours, 20 minutes
  • Run: 84 hours, 30 minutes

His victory placed him far ahead of his closest competitors, including fellow Polish athletes Jurand Czabański and Rafał Godzwon. While Karaś’s performance seemed to cement his place as one of the all-time greats, his subsequent positive doping test cast a shadow over these accomplishments.

The Positive Test and Controversy

The International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA) confirmed that a sample collected from Karaś during the event tested positive for banned substances, including drostanolone and meldonium. While the IUTA refrained from naming him directly, Karaś took to social media to preemptively admit his violation.

“I take full responsibility for my positive doping test,” he wrote, explaining that he had used prescribed medications earlier in the year to recover from injuries to his arms, ribs, and foot. According to Karaś, he had been assured that the substances would not enhance his performance or linger in his system by the time of the competition.

💉
I take full responsibility for the result of my anti-doping test. However, I assure you that I did not take these substances to improve my score in the competition in Brazil. I took the measures in January so that I could prepare for the MMA fight I fought on February 3. This did not have any positive effect on my preparations or the start in the World Cup itself, which took place at the end of May. As proof of my truthfulness, I present the documentation of the variograph examination.

Karaś claimed the drugs were prescribed during preparation for an unrelated MMA fight in February 2023 and had no impact on his performance in the Deca Triathlon. “It had no positive impact on my preparation or on my performance in Rio. I requested doping tests myself to validate my record,” he stated, adding that he submitted a lie detector test as proof of his honesty.

Despite his defense, experts noted that drostanolone is an anabolic agent known for its ability to enhance recovery and endurance—key attributes in an event as grueling as the Deca Triathlon. Meldonium, on the other hand, improves oxygen efficiency, another significant advantage for endurance athletes.

A Legacy in Question

The IUTA’s handling of the case emphasised the athlete’s right to due process, but the confirmation of banned substances ultimately led to Karaś being stripped of his record and receiving a two-year suspension from competition.

While Karaś has maintained that his use of prohibited substances was unintentional, the case raises broader questions about the pressures faced by elite athletes in ultra-endurance events. These races push competitors to the limits of human capability, often leaving them searching for ways to enhance recovery and maintain performance.

A Cautionary Tale

His achievements, while remarkable, are now overshadowed by questions of fairness and integrity. As Karaś serves his suspension, his story remains a cautionary tale for those who push the boundaries of what’s possible. For the ultra-endurance community, it’s a moment to reflect on the values that define the sport and the importance of maintaining its integrity.
