The fifth Ironman 70.3 UK saw record temperatures, record numbers, record crowds and two former champions reclaim both their position as the Ironman 70.3 UK Champions and the king and queen of the hills.
Under clear blue skies, the Ironman 70.3 UK got underway at 7am after a rousing chorus of “God Save the Queen” resounded through the tranquil and serene valley. Moments later the valley erupted as the horn sounded and the toughest 70.3 in the world started and 1,500 athletes faced up to the 52 hills in 56 miles.
The swim was a closer affair than in previous years as the entire lead male group bunched together and powered around the single loop triangular course. Heading into transition, Fraser Cartmell, Stephen Bayliss, Phil Graves and Faris Al- Sultan were all within moments of each other. Rich Allen joined them, looking a serious prospect. Jonas Djurbeck and Paul Ambrose rounded out the group.
As the sun set, once more the reputation of this already hard race grew that little bit more. With entries opening tomorrow for the 2011 race, athletes are already waiting to test themselves against the ‘toughest 70.3 in the world’. Question is…….will you join them?
