Joseph Lampe Heads a Stellar Field to take the win at the Hervey Bay Triathlon

Monday 23 April 2012 “Joseph Lampe has beaten out a stellar field to take the win at the Hervey Bay Triathlon, held in Queensland over the weekend.

Despite not featuring as a major race on the Australian race calendar, the event has attracted some of Australia’s best athletes since it’s inception in 1988.

Lampe led out of the water ahead of renowned swimmer and 2011 Hawaii Ironman runner up Pete Jacobs, and capitalized on Jacobs’s slower transition to create a lead on the bike.

Out on the bike Lampe knew he would have his work cut out to maintain his lead, with Australian Long Course Champion Tim Reed and New Zealand Long Course Champion Callum Millward on his tail.

“With that small lead out of the swim I just put my head down and went for it, and at one point I looked back and saw daylight so I knew I was in a good position.

“I knew I had a good gap heading into the run, but it wasn’t till about 1km to go that I knew I had it won. That was a pretty awesome moment.”

For Lampe the result provided great preparation leading into his first US race in May; the iconic Wildflower race.

“I’ve been preparing for my US race season and doing a big strength endurance phase so it was great to get a chance to test the legs out. I felt great through every part of the race, and to take the win is awesome. I’m really happy “I can’t wait to race Wildflower.”
