Swimming training for Triathlon: Is it THAT important?
By Mick Maroney Triathlon is a sum of three component parts. The swim leg, generally speaking, comprises the least of the 3 time components that make up the sport. A swim leg can range from the 750 metres of a sprint distance race, to the 3.8 km Ironman event. Many variables come into play in [...]
Hawaii Ironman Vegans – A dinner with you in mind
For those Ironman vegans out there who are racing at Kona this year the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel is putting on their popular four course vegan dinner with guest host Hilary Biscay. The dinner will be three days out from the big race and is definitely worth the effort.
Hydration: Is it really SALT easy?
In one litre of sweat, an athlete will lose anywhere between 800mg to 1200mg but has been known to exceed 1800mg. In this same litre of sweat, an athlete will lose between 0 and 10mg of magnesium. Sodium is the only electrolyte that is extracellular (meaning in the blood stream). Its role during activity is to assist in delivering carbohydrate, oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles.

Dextro Energy Dextrose Tablets Provide Immediate Energy During Performance

Nutritional Training – The fourth Discipline of Triathlon can make or break your big day
Nutritional training is basically conditioning our digestive system for what it will have to handle come race day. One key element of this to realise is that the gut is an extremely trainable organ. We can train it just like we do our muscles, lungs and heart to adapt to the stresses we place on it. During a triathlon, especially an ironman, there is a lot of stress on all of our body’s functional systems, especially our gut. Alex Price talks about how to incorporate this in to your race training program.
Energy Gels – The Ultimate Energy Boost
Energy gels do work and if used correctly can give you that ultimate energy boost to get you out of trouble and to the finish line. Energy gels are a convenient way of getting carbohydrate into the system quickly. The consistency is often very thick and quite sweet. If not enough water is taken with the gel it can be detrimental to your performance, stomach cramps, stitches and vomiting are the common complaints.
Healthy & Fast – Why it is so Important to Keep your Immune System Strong
We’ve all heard it before – ‘eat more fruit and veg’, ‘sleep more’ etc. But as endurance athletes and mostly as age group athletes who work and have many other commitments other than training, it is often these points that are ignored for ‘more kms’ in the strive to get faster. In this article, and in following ones, Alex Price will explain to you why it is vital that you listen to these messages and why there is far more to getting ‘fit’ than just training.
Under-prepared for a Triathlon? Make Your Dream Day Come True!
Let’s face it, with our big race looming around the corner, many of us have been caught a little off guard! Like any other deadline, race day has been “ages” away for a long time now. So long in fact, that we are now left high and dry, wondering how we are actually going to pull together everything and get through the whole ordeal!
Base & Aerobic Threshold Training
With the New Year here and the first part of the season behind us, there is a break with regards to long course and ironman racing. That means a lot of us will, and perhaps should look at this period as a mid season break and go back to developing our aerobic systems. This is especially important this year with Ironman Australia and Huskisson Long Course moving back a month and Cairns still six months away!
