Age Groupers Excel at Huskisson Long Course Triathlon 2010 – The Men
Near perfect conditions greeted the athletes at the 2010 Huskisson Long Course Triathlon, the swim course was changed from last year, but with a flat surface and no discernible currents or tides athletes were able to put in some seriously fast times.
The first wave of the day into the water behind the Pros was the 30 -34 men, one of the largest and most competitive of the groups racing. Michael Prince, Nathan Fitzakerley and Trent Chapman exited the water together in 25.21 and set off for a battle royale, sticking together on the bike and finally settling the finish order on the run. Line honours went to Nathan who was also the first age grouper home. Nathan ran straight through the finish line without breaking pace, to end up in the medical tent “he had obviously given his all.
The U20 category revealed some stars of the future with Christopher Timpson and Matt Shipard both posting fast times, at the other end of the age divide Geoff Thoreson smashed the 65-69 age group in 5.14.10, and Ron Smith ran an amazing 1.37.42 to take out the 60-64 age group in 4.55.26.
The 55-59 age group saw a dead heat between Robert Pickard and a fast finishing Rob Howitt for 2nd. Bruce Thomas, former Australian Ultra Distance Triathlon champion finished second in the 40-44 category behind Matthew Koorey and Leigh Chapman had a very solid race to take out the 25-29 age group in 3.52.09
