New Ironman 70.3 Monterrey Triathlon announced in Mexico

Looking for a new part of the world to visit for your next triathlon? Well you may like the latest news from Ironman, with a new 70.3 event added to the global circuit. Ironman 70.3 Monterrey will be held on March 16 2014 in Monterrey, the capital of the North Eastern state of Nuevo Leon, in Mexico.

IRONMAN and the organizers of IRONMAN ® Cozumel, IRONMAN Los Cabos and IRONMAN 70.3 ® Cozumel, today announced the addition of a new triathlon in Mexico – IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey. IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey will take place March 16, 2014, in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Online registration is now open.
“With the success of our races in Cozumel and Los Cabos, we are excited to add an additional venue in Mexico,” said Steve Meckfessel, Managing Director of Global Race Operations for IRONMAN. “Monterrey provides a perfect setting for our IRONMAN 70.3 series to grow and we look forward to a great first year in 2014.”

One of nearly 60 events in the global IRONMAN 70.3 series, IRONMAN 70.3 Monterey will lead athletes on a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run. The swim will take place in the beautiful Santa Lucia River, one of Monterey’s most popular tourist destinations and finish at the Mexican History Museum at Macroplaza in downtown Monterrey. The 56-mile fast bike course starts and finishes at the Macroplaza next to the Governor ´s Office Building. The two-loop run course will start and finish at the Macroplaza and will go along the scenic Santa Lucia Riverwalk and inside Fundidora Park.

The Santa Lucia River promenade starts at the  ¨Ojos de Agua de Santa Lucia ¨ where the city of Monterrey was founded. Through its lengthy passageway of 1.6 miles, it connects the Macro Plaza at the Mexican History Museum all the way to the Parque Fundidora. The promenade features 10 beautiful pedestrian bridges between the corridors and 22 tranquil fountains.

More than 2,000 participants are expected for the inaugural event in 2014. IRONMAN 70.3 Monterrey offers a professional prize purse of $50,000 and 40 coveted age-group slots to the 2014 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.
