Richie Cunningham gets podium finish in Ironman 70.3 Austin

Australian Richie Cunningham achieved a solid third place finish in the Lone Star state. Cunningham who now lives in Austin, had won the race for the past two years, and is very familiar with the course as he is able to train over it on a regular basis, however this year he was piped to line honors by James Cunama and Marko Albert.  Richie put in a consistently good performance across all three disciplines, but was out biked by Albert, and out run by Cunnama who put in a blisteringly fast 1hr 12 minute half marathon. Paul Amey withdrew from the race after the swim.

In the womens race Australia’s Christie Sym was able to run her way into fourth place after snapping her chain on the bike. The race was won by Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig.

This race was also the first age group qualifying race for the newly announced Ironman 70.3 World Championships on September 11, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nevada
